Pediatric Endocrinology · New York

Ilene Fennoy, MD, MPH

Professor of Pediatrics at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. For more than 45 years I have cared for children with growth, hormonal and weight related conditions, and trained the doctors who will care for them next.

Clinical focus

Children with complex growth and hormonal conditions

I am a board certified pediatric endocrinologist and an attending physician at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital and Harlem Hospital Center. At Columbia I am Medical Director of the Comprehensive Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program and Director of the POWER Program for Overweight Education and Reduction.

My research looks at the conditions that travel with obesity in children and adolescents: insulin resistance, cardiovascular risk, and how young people fare after bariatric surgery.

Childhood obesity and insulin resistance

Exercise programmes, nutrition education and, for some adolescents, bariatric surgery, each studied for its effect on young patients.

Growth and Klinefelter syndrome

Care for children whose growth or hormonal development needs a specialist, including boys with Klinefelter syndrome.

Bone health

Bone health in children and adolescents, as part of the wider picture of endocrine care.

Childhood obesity is “one of the most pressing health challenges of today.”

New medications, precision medicine and genetic research are changing how doctors approach weight and growth disorders in children.

Mentoring

The doctors who come next

I have trained many fellows in pediatric endocrinology, and several of them now lead programmes in pediatric obesity of their own. Their success is one of the things I am proudest of.

Teaching and mentoring are how a field keeps up with new treatments and new science, so they remain at the centre of my work.
